The "hot cocktail party" turned out to be fabulous and fun for all! The food and treats were fantastic, and the kissing booth was a hit, as all proceeds benefited Girls Inc. of Santa Barbara!

Having pets in weddings has become very popular this year. In fact, Nico Designs has even had the pleasure to work with some wonderful couples and their furry friends in creating some of the most spectacular and heart-warming weddings. After all, for pet-lovers, their dogs, cats, or birds may be just as important as any other member of their family- why wouldn't they want them to be included on their most special of days?

I did some research and have found some other websites that talk about pets in weddings as well as some canine fashion for all kinds of special occasions. As a dog lover myself, I could not think of a more fun-loving guest to have at a wedding!

Nico Designs at Lotusland! By Annabel Heydorn

Last month, the Nico Designs team had the greatest pleasure of designing a very exclusive, private dinner at the one and only Ganna Walska Lotusland in Montecito, Calfornia. I was SO excited when asked to share a little bit about this event with all of you because I think Lotusland is a BEAUTIFUL and extremely unique location to visit… it's AWESOME!

We hung carriage lanterns down the lemon arbor to provide some twinkling illumination for the cocktail hour.

Beautiful, lush centerpieces filled the table with wooden and gold candlesticks to embellish the dining experience.

The dinner, the décor and the gorgeous, natural location was enjoyed by all involved in creating and participating in this truly one-of-a-kind event!

Workout of the Month

Beautiful Brides here is the Nico Designs workout of the month. This workout routine includes weight training tips, as well as cardio exercises. This plan should be followed about 5 months before the big day for best results, so hop to it ladies and have fun!!

Workout:

Each week alternate two days of cardio with three days of strength training to help tone your legs, back, abdominals, chest and arms.

Monday

• Back, biceps, abs: Warm up with three to five minutes of cardio and stretching. Unless the instructions for an exercise say otherwise (see list below), perform each move 10 to 15 times without stopping, rest one minute, do another set of 10 to 15 reps, rest, and repeat for a final set of 10 to 15 reps. After weight training, do 15 minutes of cardio (choose from last month's list), followed by a cooldown and a few minutes of easy stretching.
• Rowing: Stand facing a bench with your left foot forward and your right foot back. Lean over, placing your left hand and knee on the bench. Grasp a 2- or 3-pound dumbbell in your right hand, wrist in, then pull elbow up and back, as if rowing. Switch sides to complete one set.
• Bicep curls: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes facing forward. Keep arms at sides, palms facing forward. Holding dumbbells (2 or 3 pounds each for beginners, 5 to 7 pounds for intermediates, 7 to 10 pounds for advanced exercisers), bend elbows and raise weights to chest. Return arms to sides.
• Standing abs 1: Standing on your left leg, extend right leg slightly to your right side, with toes touching the floor. Extend arms up to the left, forming a straight line with your extended leg. Keeping abs tight, pull hands down and right knee up to meet each other at your torso. Return to start. Do three sets on both sides.
• Standing abs 2: Standing on left leg, extend right leg behind you and slightly to the side, toes touching the floor. Extend right arm toward ceiling. With abs tight, lift right knee and pull right elbow down so they touch. Do three sets on both sides.

Tuesday

Skip the weight training today, and choose from any cardio options, such as a group fitness class, jogging, powerwalking, etc for 30 to 60 minutes depending on your fitness level.

Wednesday

• Chest, triceps, shoulders, abs: See Monday for instructions on stretching time, number of sets and reps, cardio work and cooldown.
• Push-ups: Do as many traditional push-ups as you can (aim for three sets of 10 to 15). When it gets tough, do knee push-ups. Keep your back straight and your abdominal muscles pulled in.
• Tricep dips: Sit on the edge of a chair or bench, feet on the floor. Hold onto chair and lift buttocks forward and off the edge. Lower yourself toward the ground until your elbows are at a 90-degree angle, then push yourself back up.
• Boxing jabs: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart; step one foot slightly forward, holding fists at shoulder height. Alternating arms, punch out without locking your elbow, turning wrist so knuckles face up.
• Overhead shoulder press: Stand with arms out to the sides, elbows bent at a 90-degree angle. Holding dumbbells (2 to 3 pounds each for beginners, 5 to 7 pounds for intermediates, 7 to 10 pounds for advanced exercisers), straighten arms toward the ceiling. Return to start.

Thursday

Cardio: See Tuesday.

Friday

• Legs, abs: Follow Monday's instructions for stretching, number of sets and reps, cardio and cooldown.
• Squats: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes facing forward, arms extended in front of you. Squat until thighs are parallel to the floor, while keeping knees directly over ankles. Return to start.
• Reverse lunge: Stand with feet together. Extend left leg behind you and drop into a lunge, keeping right knee over ankle. Return to start. Repeat with right leg behind.
• Standard abduction: Stand on left leg, toes forward. Lift right leg straight out to side, squeezing right buttock, and return. Repeat with left leg.
• Single-leg dead lifts: Holding dumbbells (2 pounds each for beginners, up to 7 pounds for intermediates, up to 10 for advanced exercisers), stand on left leg, weight on heel, and extend right leg behind you with toes pointed. Keep arms at sides. Tip forward until your torso and right leg are parallel to the floor. Return to start. Repeat with left leg raised.
• Frog diamond: Lying on your back, extend legs straight into the air. Keep thighs and heels together and feet flexed. Open legs wide, bend knees and bring toes together to make a diamond shape. Extend legs while squeezing inner thighs, and press feet to ceiling.

Saturday

Take a yoga class either at your gym or via DVD.

Sunday

Relax and enjoy a spa day!

White Pumpkins!

Shape up for your Big Day!

Want to get in shape for your wedding day? Use this simple month-by-month plan as a guideline for your workouts. With it, you'll find all levels of exercise, and reap all the benefits. The program uses two-week cycles, so if six months sounds too long, just take it two weeks at a time. The best part? No gym membership required!
Wedding Fitness Checklist

Cardiovascular workouts, like walking or jogging, can be done anywhere outside. Just make sure you have the following:

* Comfortable clothes
* Running shoes
* Two 3- or 5-pound hand weights
* A straight-back chair
* A mat or blanket (optional)

Month 1

This month, you should mainly be focused on just getting active and engaged in the program. A good way to get motivated is to start a workout diary. Write down the date, all the reasons why you need to work out, and what your goals are. Write down your weight (always weigh yourself in the morning for consistency), and use a measuring tape to record the size of your chest, waist, hips, thighs, and forearms, so you can monitor your progress. To stay motivated, keep notes all the way through.
Tip: Weigh in and take measurements once a month only. Focusing on quick results will only discourage you.

Weeks #1 and #2

* 20 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week

Weeks #3 and #4

* 30 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week

Month 2

Still here? Good work! Now get out that measuring tape and scale. Any improvements? You shouldn't focus too much on weight loss yet, but your energy should be higher. Keep writing in your journal, and pay special attention to how you feel, how you're dealing with stress, and what you think you are gaining from your exercise program.
Tip: Remember to check your heart rate about 15 minutes into your aerobic exercise to make sure you're hitting your target heart rate.

Weeks #5 and #6

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 2 sets of 10 stomach crunches
* 1 set of 10 push-ups

Weeks #7 and #8

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 10 stomach crunches
* 2 sets of 10 push-ups

Month 3

This is usually when people start to give up. Get out your diary, and flip back to your first entry. Remind yourself why you are doing this. Also, flip ahead in your calendar and check how quickly your wedding day is approaching: Aren't you glad you started exercising weeks ago? Weigh yourself and take your measurements again. Are you making progress? Even if you haven't lost weight, you should see some results in your muscle tone.
Good to know: Muscle weighs more than fat, so you might have gained a few pounds, but you've most likely turned some of that fat into muscle.

Weeks #9 and #10

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 10 stomach crunches
* 2 sets of 10 push-ups
* 1 set of 10 squats

Weeks #11 and #12

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 10 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 10 push-ups
* 2 sets of 10 squats
* 2 sets of 10 bicep curls
* 2 sets of 10 tricep curls

Month 4

Take a minute to write a note of congratulations to yourself -- you're doing an amazing job (we know it sounds cheesy, but do it anyway). Weigh yourself and take your measurements: If you've been following the program, you definitely should notice some changes by now.
Good to know: At this point, if nothing has changed, you may need a more advanced program, and you should consult a personal trainer.

Weeks #13 and #14

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 15 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 15 push-ups
* 3 sets of 15 squats
* 3 sets of 15 bicep curls
* 3 sets of 15 tricep curls
* 2 sets of 10 chest presses

Weeks #15 and #16

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 15 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 15 push-ups

Okay, now it's time to get serious: There are only eight weeks to go until your wedding. Weigh in and take your measurements. Now, where do you still need the most help? Stomach? Thighs? Butt? Pick one or two areas, and focus, focus, focus. We're going to continue along the same program, but now we're going to add an intense three sets of 15 extra exercises for whichever area still needs help. With every crunch or set, envision yourself in your gown -- you'll get there.

Weeks #17 and #18

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 15 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 15 push-ups
* 3 sets of 15 squats
* 3 sets of 15 bicep curls
* 3 sets of 15 tricep curls
* 3 sets of 15 chest presses
* 3 sets of 15 "extra target area"

Weeks #19 and #20

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 15 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 15 push-ups

Month 6

Just four weeks to go! As you get closer to your wedding date, your crazed schedule may threaten to derail your exercise program, but don't let it. Weigh in and take your measurements, but don't be surprised if they aren't as important anymore -- the way you feel should be motivation enough to keep exercising. We are going to continue working at the same level as last month. If you're having trouble finding the time to keep up this pace, cut back the number of sets you do, but use heavier weights.

Weeks #21 and #22

* 40 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week
* 3 sets of 15 stomach crunches
* 3 sets of 15 push-ups
* 3 sets of 15 squats

Engagement on top of the World...

One day when Ashley was a little girl she noticed a helicopter flying overhead. Later that night she watched smiling people waving at a helicopter on the news. Ever since then she has waved at every helicopter because, in her mind, someone is up there watching. Paul has always liked that story about Ashley and decided to include that element into his proposal scheme.

With Paul’s birthday being the day before, he setup a lunch date with two of their friends. Once Ashley had arrived at the Newport Beach Hyatt, he called to say he was running late and would be there shortly. As they were waiting around on the golf course for Paul to arrive, a helicopter flew over. Right on cue, Ashley waved to the helicopter. The helicopter proceeds to land on the 6th hole where they are standing and Paul gets out! He then proposed to her, and asks her to get in the helicopter with him. Meanwhile, friends and family of Paul and Ashley walked up and down the beach at Corona Del Mar passing out flyers asking people to wave when the helicopter would fly by. The goal was to get Ashley to see what it looked like from the helicopter’s perspective when people wave. I guess it must have been hundreds of people waving at them!

After the helicopter ride they went to The Montage in Laguna Beach for a special spa treatment for Ashley. Paul had secretly set Ashley up to go shopping with her mom for a special dress that she could wear when Paul proposed (she assumed that she would have the proposal all figured out and had bought the dress thinking she would keep it a secret from him). Paul had her whole outfit ready for her at The Spa Montage so that when she got done with her massage it was all set up and ready for her. After experiencing the most exceptional spa treatment they have ever experienced, they had a romantic dinner at the Studio, a restaurant at The Montage.

After what Ashley describes as the best day of her life, Paul tops it all off with her opening her apartment door to find the entire place filled with her favorite flowers.

Wash your hair less often. For those with extremely oily hair who shampoo twice a day, cut back to once; if you shampoo daily, try every other day. It takes two to three weeks for your scalp to adjust the amount of oil it produces. How to find the Perfect Dress for your Body Type

1.If You're Pear-Shaped

Look for: A skirt that gradually flares out in an A formation from the natural waist to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the hips and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are especially effective, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will also showcase a more slender upper body.

Keep in mind: A classic A-line silhouette lends itself to formal weddings, but it can also be dressed down when made from a more casual fabric, like eyelet lace or raw-silk shantung.

2. If You're Busty

Look for: A dress with a scooped neckline. It will open up your face and display your décolletage without showing too much cleavage. If you love the look of strapless gowns, choose one that has a slight dip along the neckline, like a sweetheart, rather than a style that goes straight across (which will make your bust appear even larger and more shelflike).

Look for: A dress that cinches in at the smallest point on the waistline, then flares out into a gradual A shape. The most slenderizing neckline for you is one with a deep V, which will draw eyes toward the vertical, not the horizontal.

5. If You're Tall

6. If You’re Straight-Lined

Keep in mind: If you have a small bust, look for a bodice with some ruching to create volume.

7. If You're Petite

Look for: Trumpet, sheath, and modified A-line gowns. Find a style with a waistline above your natural waist, to make the lower half of the dress (and therefore you) appear longer. The fabric is up to you―you can pull off a high sheen. But the detailing should be small (no huge bows) and limited to the bodice, to draw the eye upward.

Keep in mind: Be wary of dresses with a dropped waist, which will make your legs seem nonexistent, and ball gowns―it's easy to get lost in that voluminous skirt. Also, avoid anything calf-length, which will make your legs look short.

8. If You're Small-Chested

Look for: A ruched bodice. Extra fabric up top will help fill out your upper body and create the illusion of curves. Lightly padded halter styles will also do the trick.

An Extravagant Proposal

My girlfriend was expecting to go away for the weekend and she has been looking forward to this trip for about a month. That morning when she got up I told her that we were not going. I explained that we had been together for 2 years and that i had planned something much better. I handed her 2 envelopes and explained that she had appointments to have her nails done and than to have here hair done. When she got all that taken care of she was to return home. After she left I placed some more instructions and an evening gown and accessories that i had purchased earlier in the month on the bed. The instructions simply said I will pick you up at 5pm sharp. At 5pm I arrived at her place and picked her up dressed in a tux and riding in a limo. When she came down i gave her 2 white roses and placed a strand of pearls around her neck as a gift for our anniversary. The driver took us to a wonderful restaurant were ate and wonderful meal and toasted our time together. Afterward the driver took us to a park I had chosen way ahead of time. At the park I had a friend set up one of the benches close to water fountain among lots of flowers with a white table cloth, a pillow for her to sit on, 2 dozen red roses a bottle

of champagne and glasses and an assortment of flower arrangements and candles. I also had arranged for a photographer to be present who was pretending to shoot pictures of a friend on site. Upon our arrival we walked around the fountain and admired the beauty and as we approached the bench, I escorted her over and set her down and handed her the roses. As she was attempting to take it all in I got on one knee and presented the ring and before i could get the whole question out she was saying yes and shaking all over. We opened the champagne and enjoyed the moment. After a while i let her in on the fact that a photographer(she never even noticed them) was taking pictures of the whole thing as it unfolded. She was completely surprised by the whole thing and never even saw it coming..After all the pictures at the park, we went to our favorite hang out where i had all of our friends a coworkers show up to celebrate with us..As a side note i will also say that I asked her Father for his blessing, and as he did say yes but we set it up so that my girlfriend thought that he had to think about it and he wanted to talk to us both about it. She knew i would not ask her to marry without her family's blessing so the little act kept her from even suspecting it was coming..

10 Wedding Attire Questions:

1. How do I ensure that my dress will look its best on the Big Day?

Two words: Handle carefully.

Put off picking it up from the shop for as long as possible. (Forty-eight hours before showtime is ideal.) It should be given to you in a garment bag. At home, take it out immediately and hang it from the highest possible point, so the train and hemline don't touch the floor.
Traveling? Return the dress to the garment bag and repeat the process later. When flying, ask if you can carry it onboard―or you'll risk tying the knot in your tracksuit.
Should anything happen to stain or wrinkle the dress, don't take matters into your own hands. Trying to dab out even the lightest smudge can leave water marks, and ironing a fabric like tulle can transform it into a burnt, crispy mess. Call your bridal salon for help or, if you can't reach it, the nearest cleaner.

2. Which white will work for my skin tone?

With more than 200 shades of white to choose from, the only way to know which one looks best on you is trial and error. Contrary to popular belief, few wedding dresses come in pure white―which is a good thing, because pure white washes out all but the richest and deepest skin tones. Most women will end up with a gown in the ivory family that flatters their skin tone. Keep these suggestions in mind:

If you're fair-skinned, look for ivory shades containing yellow undertones.
If you have a pinker complexion, choose creamy undertones.
If you have olive, yellow-based, or dark skin, select champagne or off-white shades.

When you think you've found the right shade for you, confirm with the salesperson that the color of the sample gown you tried on hasn't been altered by wear and tear.

3. How do I make sense of all the different fabrics out there?

Some materials, like silk duchesse satin, are best for providing support and structure, while gauzier, transparent fabrics, like organza and tulle, are better for achieving a romantic, ethereal effect. (It never hurts to ask if you can order your dream gown in a different fabric.)
Want to save some money? Check out rayon blends, which have the look of silk without the expense.
To get a sense of how a fabric will behave over the course of your wedding, bunch it up tightly in your hand. If it’s wrinkled after a minute or so, imagine what it will look like by midnight.

4. Is it possible to get an inexpensive dress that doesn’t look cheap?

Nobody ever has to know that you got a great deal on your wedding dress. The single most important factor when it comes to clothing is the way it fits: If a gown is perfectly fitted to your body, it will look like it was made for you by a Parisian couturier, no matter what it cost. So if you’re on a tight dress budget, plan to put a significant portion of it―half, even―toward the services of an expert seamstress.

Other than that, keep an eye out for telltale low-quality work: Does the beading look flimsy? Are the seams shoddily finished? If you spot a flaw that can’t be corrected easily, move on to the next mannequin.

5. Are there any pretty alternatives to traditional wedding dresses?

Yes, plenty. If you vastly prefer the clothing you see in regular stores to what’s in bridal salons, then that’s where you should shop for your wedding-day attire. Some popular options:

A skirt suit in a light color, which is a sophisticated look that flatters most body types. (Make sure that the cut is very feminine, so you look like a bride, not a CEO.)
A two-piece skirt-and-top combination, especially if it is made from a silky fabric or has beading.
Baby-doll and tube-style dresses in any color are cute and playful for more casual affairs.
When in doubt, a stunning black number never fails.

6. How can I incorporate parts of a family gown into my dress?

Odds are, you probably don’t want to wear your great-grandmother’s dress down the aisle as is. But, luckily, there are other ways to bask in the sentimental value of an inherited gown. Try these tips:
If the basic structure appeals to you, have a seamstress shorten or lengthen the dress, removing or adding features as you see fit.
Harvest lace from an old gown to create your veil or an overlay, or have the lace made into a rosette on your dress. The material can also be turned into the base for your bouquet, used for a sash that you can wear around your waist, or appliquéd onto the bodice of your gown.
If the styles are too different to blend, you should consider taking both dresses to a quilt maker after the wedding and asking her to combine them into an heirloom that you can pass down.

7. What do I need to know about undergarments?

So much attention is paid to the outside of the dress, it’s easy to forget about the crucial infrastructure.
Ideally, look for a gown with a built-in corset, which makes for the best fit. (If yours doesn’t have one, ask the salesperson whether you should have a corset put in, or consider an alternative, like Spanx or some other type of controlling undergarment.)
Make sure underpinnings are as close to your skin tone as possible so they won’t suddenly become visible in certain lighting.
Try on undergarments with your gown and examine yourself in the mirror from every angle. Better yet, have a trusted helper take digital photos of you. While you may glance at your rear end for only a few moments, it’s what everyone will see during most of the ceremony.

8. What’s the word on trains: How long is too long?

Almost anything goes―just remember that you’re the one who’s going to be wearing the thing. Your choices range from no train at all to a full-tilt royal train, which extends back for more than nine feet and is probably best suited to brides with an HRH before their names.

Whatever train length you prefer, ask your dress retailer if it (a) is detachable, meaning you can ditch it after the ceremony, or (b) will need to be bustled at the base of the bodice. 9. Is it OK to wear white for a second marriage?

Absolutely. The notion that second-time-arounders should sheepishly tiptoe down the aisle in a color that advertises their lack of “purity” is hopelessly outdated. It’s your wedding day, and if you want to celebrate by wearing a white ball gown, by all means, go for it.

That said, many women do view a second wedding as a welcome opportunity to step outside the box. It’s like an automatic license to break the rules: You may be happier opting for a stunning ready-to-wear ensemble or may finally have the guts for a scarlet, backless evening gown. As long as it looks bridal (read: special enough to make you stand out from your guests), the sky is the limit.

10. What attire should the groom wear?

Whatever his choice, all the groom needs is to distinguish himself from the groomsmen. These are three classics:
A tuxedo: A penguin suit is still the gold standard for formal late-afternoon and evening weddings. Tie options include the classic bow tie, the wider ascot, and a standard necktie, which feels the most modern.
A morning suit: With a cutaway jacket and matching striped trousers, this ensemble fits a formal daytime wedding.

A few weeks past I had the amazing opportunity to provide the floral decor for an amazing couple, Jill and Ryan! They were so sweet, and I really enjoyed working with them. When Jill first came to our office and sat down for a consult, she started looking through our portfolios and noticing how 'structured' all our bouquets were. She looked up and me and asked
" Do you only do structured arrangements like this?" I laughed and replied
"Honey, I will do whatever you want me to do."
We had a nice laugh and she described that she liked arrangements "messy" and hand picked, but still balanced. I had a great time with this wedding cause I didn't have to be structured I could loosen up a bit. She found love in colors from dahlias, yellow roses, sunflowers and the deep plum of mini calla Lilly. This is also an example of a wedding that we just provided floral for, which is just one of our many services. Jill was married on the shoreline bluffs with the reception at the beach front Marmonte Hotel. I LOVE working with this hotel cause EVERYONE is SOOOOO nice and accommodating. They also coordinated her ceremony as one of their wedding packages

The Magic of Mascara

After the rest of your face is made up and you’re ready, how about rounding off your make up with a little mascara? It gives a finishing touch to your eye makeup and the effect is marvellous, wouldn’t you agree?

Steps to Apply Mascara:

First, curl your upper lashes with an eyelash curler, if your lashes are straight. See that you take in all the lashes in the curler and that it is fitted as close as possible to the bottom of the eyelash. Apply mascara by sweeping from the top and coming down, while also coating under the lashes. Now, close your eyes and apply mascara from the roots to the tips, using full strokes.

Use the comb side of the brush and comb through the lashes to separate them. You’ll find that it is easier to separate lashes before they dry. Repeat. Now, hold the brush parallel to your nose and coat the bottom lashes with a stroke of the mascara brush. Now, once again, comb through the bottom lashes with your eyebrow comb/brush.
To give an extra long look to your lashes, once they dry, coat the tips of the lashes two or three times with black mascara, while also drying and separating the lashes between applications. If you want very long lashes, coat them from the top.

You must check to see if the lash base is coated as close to the skin as possible as this shows up the shape of the eye and makes the look very natural. If you want to give the impression of not having any makeup on, coat below the lower lashes with clear mascara only and then comb them with eyebrow brush/comb after application. If you want real thick lashes, coat the upper and lower lashes with clear mascara, comb them and then coat the upper and lower lashes as with black mascara.

If you find that an excess of your mascara is deposited on the wand than required, use a tissue to wipe away the extra color before application. You can choose from a range of mascara colors such as brown, navy and green. Don’t share your mascara with anyone else, as this may cause infection in the eye. If you have the slightest irritation, take it off immediately.

Use a thin and short brush for better hand control and so that it gets to the corner of the eye easily. You could also use powder under the eye before applying mascara to avoid smudging. However, if you use a gel-based mascara, it will play up the lashes and give your thick mascara a more dramatic loo, while also adding volume to your lashes.

Brown, navy and aubergine add subtle and sophisticated touches to your eyes, while burgundy looks striking on redheads. No matter what you decide, please don’t match your mascara color with your eye color.

Now, dress up your eyes and be prepared to dazzle everyone with your rocking appearance.

There's a reason it's called blush, not embarrass ;-)

You see models and actresses and friends with slightly highlighted cheekbones. How do they get that so perfectly? Like in most things in life, there is an art to makeup too. This is the art of applying blusher, which are going to be revealed here. By using blusher, you can create an illusion to highlight your best features and even change your facial shape.

Here’s how you should go about it:

Blush is usually the last of all your cosmetics that you will use on your face, while doing your makeup. How you use this varies from different face shapes. Using the blusher right can make your face look longer, wider or as you like it.
First, find a color that matches your cheeks when they are red after a workout. If you don’t know what shade that is, slap yourself on the cheek and choose the color that emerges. The rule of thumb is that fair skin matches with rose, olive with peach and dark skin with apricot.

With the shade in hand, choose the right formula for your skin type. For oily and combination skin, powder is best and cream for dry skin. Liquid and gel are ideal for oily skin. Now, combine cream and powder and you will find your blush stays on longer and has sheen.

Now, apply foundation, eye color and lipstick. While blush is the last but one step you go through before applying powder, it’s necessary for you to experiment with what’s best for you.

How to use:

1. Dab blush on your brush and tap off any excess.

2. Smile into the mirror and see where the apple of your cheek is.

3. Keep the color of your blush light and blended. It is also good to dab it on with your middle finger, then blend with your ring and middle fingers. Experts say that the cleaner finger picks up any excess blush.

4. If you think you’ve used excess powder blush, cover it with a little translucent powder or if you’ve used cream blush, blot it off with a tissue. Remember that gel and liquid blush ‘stain’ the cheeks, so lighten it by washing your face, then moisturize and reapply your makeup, but this time use very little makeup.

5. Now, add a layer of translucent powder.

Here’s a tip: Dab a little bronzer powder on your forehead, chin and nose before you apply blush. This will give you a sun-kissed sheen. Use a big brush and a very light hand to ensure it doesn’t come through like a stripe. If you have a dark skin tone, try a caramel-color bronzer along with a yellow-based blush.

Finding the person you want to settle down with for the rest of your life is one of the most important things you will ever have to do. People find all sorts of ways to ask “Will You Marry Me” and it doesn’t always include diamond engagement rings. You can come up with some really creative and original ideas when it comes to proposing and save yourself a handsome sum on the cost of diamond jewelry. Here are some of the unique ways people have popped the question.

1) This one is pretty interesting. Most of us wouldn’t think a funeral as much of a place to ask someone to marry them, but that is exactly how one man decided to propose to his girlfriend. This story was entered into a contest that was looking to find the world’s most romantic marriage proposals. Apparently, the man was standing in front of his brother’s casket and in order to share this special moment with him, he decided to ask her then for her hand in marriage.

When the girlfriend went to change her daughter’s diaper, sure enough, there it was. (Hopefully the diaper wasn’t too dirty.)

4) What about thinking someone wants to marry you and then finding out they want to break up. Well that is exactly what happened to one woman. The Onion put out an article in February of 2003, when they heard Amanda Gentry’s story. Her boyfriend Wilson Crandall had been acting vey strangely and erratic with her. He was in law school and studying for the bar exam. He told her that once school was over he had something important to talk to her about; something that concerned their future. Having been together for many years, she thought that the time was finally coming to move forward in their relationship. Well, you just imagine the surprise she got when the “talk” finally did occur and he told her that the relationship was over.

Marriage proposals made over a romantic dinner at an elegant restaurant can be very romantic but they are not necessarily creative. Many women dream about the day that the man of their dreams proposes to them and hope that the day will be absolutely perfect in every way imaginable. Making Faces

I picked up this fantastic book entitled, "Making Faces," by Kevyn Aucoin, a book often referred to as 'the beauty bible' and thought I would start by sharing Aucoin's basic loose powder tips:

1. When using powder products such as eyeshadow or blush, a light application of loose or pressed powder first is the best way to ensure smooth blending. Powder eyeshadows or blushes applied directly to the skin will 'grab' in the oily areas, creating a blotchy application.

2. Loose powder, alone, can act as a sheer foundation, by toning down the shine and evening out the skin.

3. To avoid uneven distribution, shake off excess powder from the sponge or brush before applying to the face.

4. Adding extra loose powder just under the eye, down the bride of the nose and right under the bottom lip, at the start of your makeup application, can result in the subtle highlighting of these spots when you're finished. Powder, under the eye, also helps catch falling shadow and mascara, which can be easily brushed away when you're done.

A Commercial Worth Watching

Since I will be out of town tomorrow for my Friday blog post, I thought I would update early and give you guys this sweet engagement story to check out:

Every Thursday night, my girlfriend and I would tape 'Friends', and then watch it together over the weekend.

I took the tape, and during a commercial on the tape, I edited in a 'Special News Bulletin' announcement that I took from another tape.

Right after the news bulletin announcement, I edited in a tape of myself, telling her how much I loved her, and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

While she was watching the taping that weekend, I excused myself to the bathroom a few minutes earlier and changed into the same tuxedo that I was wearing in the tape.

I got the ring ready, and walked back into the room just as my little speech was finishing, I bent to one knee, and asked her the question again… "Will you marry me?"

Her answer was an enthusiastic "YES!"

Not all eyeliners are created equal; there are several things that you have to think about when you are purchasing eyeliner. When you are purchasing your eyeliner you should think about things like the shape of your eyes, the weather, and the color of your eyes. While you are in the cosmetic aisle of your drugstore you will have to decide what type of eyeliner you want to use. Before you can even decide on the color of eyeliner you want, you need to decide if you want to use liquid eyeliner, a soft tipped eyeliner pencil, a felt tipped eyeliner, or a cake eyeliner.

Types of Eyeliners

If you have never used eyeliner before you should probably select a soft tipped eyeliner pencil. The pencils are easy to use and won’t smear as easily as the other types of eyeliners. One of the things that you can do to make using pencil eyeliner easier is to place it in your refrigerator before you try to sharpen it. Chilling the pencil first will prevent the pencil eyeliner from breaking.

Liquid eyeliners are a wonderful choice in eyeliner when you are getting ready to go out for the evening. The liquid eyeliner usually has more of a shimmering quality than the other types of liquid which draws even more attention to your eyes while also making them appear brighter, and full of energy.

Felt tipped eyeliners are easy to use. After using a felt tipped eyeliner you will be pleased with the bold outline along your lash line.

Using Your Eyeliner

When you are using your eyeliner pencil to outline your eyes you need to remember that the skin you are drawing on is extremely delicate. Make sure that you are very careful. Remember that your eyeliner should just glide across your eyelid; you shouldn’t have to exert any pressure at all.

A common mistake many novices make when they are applying their eyeliner, is assuming that they make one long stroke along their lash line. The best way to apply eyeliner is with short feathery strokes.

Painfully Engaged ;-)

Here is an engagement story to remember...

Felicia flew to Washington State to spend some time with Eric. They were going through the Ape Caves(pitch black caves with rocks to hike and climb and go down) with Eric's friend.

After a little ways through the cave Felicia stepped on a rock sending excruciating pain through the center of her foot. It was also caught between rocks, twisting her foot even more as she fell down.

Felicia tried to assure Eric that she would be fine despite the pain. But after awhile she realized that it was much more serious than she had originally thought and could not even move. The panic set in, and she began crying uncontrollably.

Luckily, Eric's friend was trained as a military medic and immediately started searching for wood around the cave. After a few minutes, he came back with semi-petrified wood, took a knife Eric had in his survival backpack, and cut it in half with a rock as a hammer, and he made Felicia a splint!

Eric, being the overprepared man he is, had parachute rope to tie it on with. As they were tying the wood to Felicia's foot, Eric said "Here, hold this," and handed Felicia an engagement ring! He proposed to her right there while she was already crying from pain from her foot, and she started crying harder. His friend thought she was about to hit him from asking at a terrible time, but Felicia said "No, these are happy tears!!".

Eric later told Felicia that he was going to propose after they finished the hike through the Ape Caves but they had to turn back because Felicia's foot hurt too much. The new engagement combined with his friend's conversation gave Felicia the distraction she needed to walk on her ankle as well as crawl and slide up and down the rocks and boulders. Eric's friend was trying to distract Felicia from her pain and helpless claustrophobia by asking her random questions like what her job used to be like, how her cat's personality was like, and her favorite color and animal. All the while Eric went behind Felicia making sure she had light to see where to put her weight. After two grueling hours, they finally made it out of the cave.

While at the hospital, they found out that nothing was broken; just severely sprained. Eric had Felicia's return flight extended from June 16th to July 6th to not only give her foot some time to heal, but to give the newly engaged couple more time to spend together.

Some Basic Eye Do's and Don'ts for Brides to be:

DO

* Think seriously about hiring a makeup artist; everyday makeup is different from your wedding day needs.
* Take time to try a few different makeup artists and choose one who understands your personal tastes.
* Use eye drops if your eyes look red or tired on the day of (but stick with a brand you've used before to avoid unwelcome surprises).
* Get as much sleep as possible the night before the big day.
* Apply concealer to banish dark circles under your eyes.
* Use matte eye shadows (they won't reflect light or look too shiny).
* Use an off-white matte shadow along your brow bone if you have light skin, or peach if you have dark skin, to illuminate your eyes even more.
* Blend well, especially at the corners of your eyes, since cameras pick up visible makeup lines.
* Define your brows with a pencil or powder that matches your hair color.
* Wear at least two layers of mascara.
* Use an eyelash curler before and after applying your first coat of mascara.

A Strawberry Red Proposal

Here is another heart touching proposal story I have to share with you all:

My boyfriend of 5 1/2 years, Matt, took me out on a romantic date on January 6, 2009, because I would be leaving soon to spend a semester of school in Washington D.C. While at The Melting Pot, a well-known fondue restaurant, he got up to use the restroom. Really, he talked to our servers about getting a rose to give me my diamond ring on. They instead suggested that he give them the ring to put in my salad or to bring out with dessert. He chose to have them bring it out with dessert. So, after dinner, they brought our chocolate fondue out and put it on the table, and then one server said, "We have one more drink for you sir." Matt walked around the corner and came back to the table with a black tray filled with flower petals and strawberries cut into hearts. In the center of the tray there was a martini glass with more petals inside . . . along with a gorgeous diamond ring customized by Matt at Andrew's Jewelers. He had me scoot to the end of the booth where he was down on one knee, and he proposed! When we left, we danced along to a romantic song in the parking lot. It was perfect.

Pucker Up

There will probably never come another day when there will be so much attention put on your lips as on your wedding day, so read these tips to make those lips look luscious and kissable:

1. Use Lip Primers

The key to great lips, as with soft skin, is exfoliation -- the sloughing off of dead surface skin. To combat chapping and flakes, exfoliate your mouth every day leading up to your wedding, but skip the morning of to avoid any unnecessary irritation (if you follow this regime, you won't need to anyway).
Try a lip-polishing product, or use this even simpler exfoliation option: just grab your toothbrush. Brushing your lips with a wet brush will help remove dead skin.

2. Apply Moisturizers

After you've primed your lips, treat them right with frequent applications of moisturizer.

3. Finish with Color

When it come to the lipstick itself, you'll want to find a non-drying color that stays put without fading or feathering, plus a dewy shine that looks natural.

A Scientific Engagement

Happy Friday everyone! I thought this engagement story would make for a perfect way to start the weekend, so enjoy and have a happy 4th of July tomorrow:

My birthday fell on a Monday this year and being a high school teacher, there was no opportunity to celebrate that day having to wake up early the following morning. My birthday also falls during the Thanksgiving holiday break so my fiance decided that we would celebrate my birthday on that Friday, due to school being closed, by attending the Buffalo Museum of Science and then to a nice dinner. I have always enjoyed museums and was excited to go, especially because I had known he hadn't been to this particular museum since he was a young boy. We arrived at the museum and began walking around. It was a wonderful early afternoon, although chilly, as we walked around the different exhibitions. We came to the Rocks and Gemstones exhibit and I knew he would be excited to walk around there because he enjoys collecting fossils and geodes as a hobby. I walked along ahead looking at all the different stones and rocks. As I approached one of the long cases I realized that toward the end of the glass case there was some sparkle. I thought to myself, wow, they have a real diamond in here! I walked to that end of the case and looked in at a gorgeous diamond ring in this very beautiful silver ornate box. As I was admiring the ring I happened to glance at the small paper lying next to it, which was nothing out of the ordinary for this exhibit, and happened to fall upon my name and his name toward the bottom of the print. My heart skipped a beat and I turned to him in disbelief. While I fell into Adam's chest shaking slightly, the curator, who stood nearby, started to unlock the case to retrieve the box with my engagement ring as Adam asked me to marry him. I of course said yes and that was the beginning of the rest of our life together. I later found out that everyone on the museum staff knew about the plan and that Adam had set it up convincing the curator to help him and when I began to think back earlier that day at the museum it dawned on me that we were being followed by staff wondering if he had asked me! This was such a perfect day for me and I am so thrilled to become Adam's wife.

Hands ready for the Bling!

Here are a few helpful tips to get that perfect set of nails on your wedding day! After all, there's no better way to show off that special something on your fourth finger :-)

1. Start getting weekly manicures. If the price is too steep for you, get a professional manicure just once a month, and do your own nails during the three weeks in between.
2. Drink a mixture of orange juice and Knox gelatin once a week to help strengthen nails. For best results, adopt this beauty ritual at least one month before wedding day.
3. Use a nail-building base coat under your polish.
4. If you're a nail-biter, coat your nails with polish that tastes so bitter it stops you from nibbling. Use it for at least two months before your wedding.
5. Protect your nails from harsh chemicals by wearing rubber gloves when doing dishes and other household chores.
6. Steer clear of dish soap. Soak hands instead in warm water made sudsy with your favorite shampoo.
7. Apply a heavy dose of hand cream at bedtime to prevent dry, cracking skin. To really do it right, cover with cotton gloves so it soaks in while you doze.
8. Ward off chips and splits by buffing nails nightly with a smoothing block.

Concealer: A Brides Best Friend

Whether it's a small scar, a red pimple, a broke blood vessel, or dark under-eye circles, with the correct concealer even these seemingly stressful imperfections can vanish on your wedding day. Here are some smart tips to get the most out of your concealer:

Smooth Selection

Concealers come in pots, sticks, wands, compacts, and tubes. But no matter which packaging you choose, look for a creamy texture, one that’s smooth to the touch. Avoid products that feel greasy, dry, or thick, or ones that have a chalky consistency.

Color Theory

The right concealer shade is yellow-based, not white, which can be much too light on the face. The biggest mistake women make with concealer is using too light a shade. Search for a concealer that is only one to two subtle shades lighter than your skin tone.

Apply Now

Start by putting concealer under the eye right up to the lower lashes and, most importantly, on the innermost corner of the eye. This is the most recessed area on the face, and therefore the darkest-appearing, but women often neglect it.

Blend Well

Smooth and blend concealer in a gentle pressing action with the pads of your first two fingers. The aim is to make it as smooth as possible so it isn’t visible or distracting. Be gentle, though -- you don't want to end up rubbing the concealer away. One of the most common concealer mistakes is overzealous blending.

Ready, Set...

To set your concealer, dust on yellow-toned powder with a big powder puff. Use a generous amount, because more is better here; simply dust away excess with a brush. The powder keeps the concealer locked in place, and the yellow tone does wonders for dark circles. For extremely dark circles, choose a heavy-formula concealer in a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone.

Now You See It

To cover a red pimple, use a concealer shade as close to your skin tone as possible. If it's a dark blemish, use a slightly lighter concealer. Using your concealer brush, dab on a small amount of concealer and set with powder. If necessary, add a second layer of each. And remember: It's okay if you don't achieve total elimination. The point is to de-emphasize. An overly concealed spot will only call attention to itself -- not the goal you had in mind.

A Country Proposal...

Here is a fantastically creative engagement story that I thought you all would enjoy:

My "new" fiance stayed with me on Saturday night. When I awoke on Sunday morning he was gone. I walked into my room to look for him, but what I found was a little heart shaped box. On the top of the box was the letter "I". Inside the box were rules, a piece of a puzzle, and instructions. The instructions told me where to go next. I went to the second location and found another box with instructions and another puzzle piece in it. On the second box was the letter "L". The process repeated and I had to find boxes, "O" and "V". The Box with the letter "E" on it was at my best friends house and the instructions told me to put the puzzle together and find the missing piece. Our first date was a Colts game, the picture was him in front of the stadium. I had to drive to Indy to the stadium to find him. When I arrive he was waiting outside the gate with the last box that had the letter "U" on it. When I opened it he pushed play on a boom box. Our song is Taylor Swift: Love Story. At the end of the song it says, and he knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring. He did just that and sang the song to me. It was the sweetest day ever!

20 Fantastic Beauty Tips To Look Your Best On Your Big Day:

1. Waterproof It
Choose a mascara that's waterproof; it lasts longer and withstands tears. If you really don't like the look or feel, use one coat of regular mascara, then follow up with a light coat of waterproof mascara.

Bonus Tip: If your veil needs to be removed after the ceremony, make sure your hairdresser shows your mom or maid of honor how to do it without mussing your 'do.

2. On the Line

There is something so beautiful about fresh flowers in your hair, and nothing is a classic as a gardenia. It has the complete Billie Holiday glamour., and good number of our brides request it.

But the reality is, a gardenia only stays fresh for so long, they soon turn yellow and limp and not at all glamorous.

So, what is the solution? Many would say silk gardenias would be the way to go. Personally, I have no problem with a good quality faux flower, but the silk gardenias I have seen don't seem to capture the lovely density of a gardenia petal.

How To Get The Girl Of Your Dreams

Ok guys here is a blog entry specifically for the men who are desperately trying to come up with unique ideas of how to sweep the love of their life off her feet and get that "YES!" answer to the oh so famous, "Will you marry me?" question. I came across this article in my search for an engagement story to share with you all and thought it was worth sharing.

Here is a list of ideas of how to pop the question so that she can't possibly say "No."

• Organize a demonstration
Stand up for your right to marry her! You will need your friends’ help for this one. Assemble all your friends, make them hold some “marry me” or “marry him” banners and start marching around her neighborhood; stop outside her house and make a lot of noise. She will hear you sooner or later. As soon as she gets out, do you really think she could say “no” with all her friends and neighbors staring at you both?

• Do it with a short movie.
Make a short movie of your story. If you don’t have many videos of you, just hide a camera in your house and film some every day stuff you do together. It must have it all: kisses, fights, discussions. Then, find a movie theater and ask as a favor to play your movie. Ask her to go to the movies together and also tell her friends and family to come to the cinema with you. End your movie with the phrase: I want this forever…will you marry me?

• Elopement
You have sure heard of elopement as a sudden and secret marriage with no guests. In the past, the man used to elope with his wife (he used to actually kidnap her from her house) in order to get married without her parent’s permission. What I am suggesting is a modern version of that. As soon as you have every detail of your marriage arranged, you will have a couple of friends kidnap her in her sleep and bring her to you; where will you be? In a pretty quiet church of course, standing in a suit in the front door. All you have to do is kneel and ask her.
Don’t choose that way unless your girlfriend has a lot of humor and strong nerves.

• Send her intimidating letters.
What will she think if she starts receiving letters like:
You have 5 days left
You have 4 days left
You have 3 days left
You have 2 days left.
You have 1 day left as a single woman. Will you marry me?
She will probably panic, try to calm her down; tell her it is nothing, maybe a silly joke… Do not let her call the police!

• On air!
She must have a favorite radio broadcast right? Something that she listens to when she is cooking or taking her bath? Imagine her surprise when one run-of-the-mill day she listens to your proposal. And then, there comes your song. Just, make sure you are around! You can also surprise her in every day routine. For example, write “will you marry me?” in her coffee cup and let her see as soon as she will drink her coffee. Just avoid stereotypes like writing your proposal in the mirror using her $50 lipstick.

• Don’t ask her
Instead, let her favorite celebrity ask her on your behalf. Is her favorite band coming to town? Find them a couple of days before the concert and arrange the details. They will probably say yes. After all, you are a romantic man in love. But, will she?

• Tell her with a huge public note!
Print her picture in a really large size and post it in the subway station she goes every day. As soon as she enters, she will notice that everyone give her strange look or mischievous smiles. Maybe because there is a huge picture of her in the platform and that says “will you marry me on it?” while she is still stand stop hiding and go to her. Clapping may not let you hear her “yes” so read her lips!

Hi all! So, many of my brides this summer are getting married on the beach or grass, and have asked me for footwear options. Well, I came across this FANTASTIC site that carries fancy flat sandals. The Curls of Summer

Whenever the warm summer months come around, so do the natural looking bridal hair styles. It seems to me that summer brides are falling more and more for soft waves and unfussy updos. Here are some ideas for all of those summer brides who want to catch the carefree and uncomplicated ambiance of summer with a fun and simple hair style.

Loose Waves
“Tousled hair looks effortless, but this style does require some work,” says Monzon. Apply a thickening mousse to towel-dried hair and spray a volumizer just at the roots to keep hair from falling flat, and then blow dry using a round brush, lifting up at the roots for body. Let your part fall naturally—but aim for it to be 2-3” deep and lined up just after the start of the eyebrow. Take 1.5” wide sections and wrap them around a 1” barrel curling iron starting halfway down the section. Do your entire head and then shake the waves out with your fingers—don’t brush. Rub a dime-sized dollop of Kérastase Crème Nutri-Sculpt between your palms and gently run them along the waves from roots to ends to smooth frizz; spritz hair with a light setting spray to keep the waves from falling out in seaside humidity.

Half-Up Hair
The perfect adaptation of the summer downdo maintains length while keeping strands away from the face. Start by applying a quarter size amount of a styling cream on damp hair and blow dry with a round brush. Wrap 2” wide sections around a 1” barrel curling iron starting halfway down the section; curl the entire head and then shake out with your fingers. Back comb the roots of the underside section of the top half of the hair—in front and on the sides above the ears—for volume; then separate the top half from the bottom half. Loosely gather the top half to the center of the back of your head and do one quick vertical twist so the hair makes a mini roll. Pin the roll with body pins where it meets the head with u-shaped hairpins by pushing them in and down. Spray the top with a light hold spray to keep flyways down.

Polished Ponytail
Set off an intricate gown with a low ponytail. To get the look, make a 2” deep side part lined up over the center of the eye and sweep the hair by bringing it slightly forward and then across the forehead. Brush all the hair into a low ponytail and secure at the nape of the neck. Take hair from the ponytail and curl 1-2” sections by winding them around a 2” curling iron. Shake the curls out with your fingers then spray the entire head with a light hold spray, which will hold the curls and give grip to the hair so the headband has something to hold onto. Tie on the headband and wind extra ribbon around the base of the ponytail and cut off the excess. Rub 1-2 drops of shine serum between your palms and run them along the exposed hair on top of your head for extra gleam.

Sleek and Straight
Sliding on a gorgeous floral headband ups the glamour factor of simple strands. To create a balanced look, place your hair accessory opposite the side part. The key to this look is in a great blow out, so prep towel-dried hair with Kérastase Volumactive Mousse and blow it dry section by section with a large round brush for smoothness. Next create a 3-inch deep part lined up with the center of your eyebrow, then sweep the hair to one side and pin it behind the ear. A flower headband keeps the style from being too casual and stylist Matthew Monzon says to keep hair accessories or flowers on the sweeping side so the focus stays in one place “instead of having the two sides competing with each other.” Keep some smoothing cream on hand to smooth any flyaways that pop up throughout the day.

Faux Bob
Get a shorter look for your big day without committing to a cut. Prep damp hair with a nickel size amount of smoothing cream for coarse hair or a volumizing spray if you have fine hair. Blow dry with a round brush for smoothness, lifting at the roots to build volume. Make a short 1-1.5” deep part and brush the hair from the crown back and down the back of the head. Roll under sections of hair from the bottom up around your fingers (act like your fingers are a curling iron) until you reach the bottom of the head, and then pin the rolls just above the nape of the neck with bobby pins. Let chin-length layers fall out to make the bob look natural and finish with a light mist of shine spray. Keep a stash of bobby pins on-hand during the reception.

In an attempt to cheer me up, My dear friend Tracy Beard gave me two front row tickets to see 311 and Ziggy Marley at the Santa Barbara Bowl. I just LOVE live music and gladly accepted the tickets and Invited my favorite lighting guy Lani Balanoff (LBPS). Though I had the first row above the Mosh pit with all the OTHER old people , I still managed to rock out and I had such a blast. In Life, sometimes we need a little distraction to help us re-boot and jump back in the conga line. Hope everyone is having an awesome weekend!

Marriage Proposal Dos and Don'ts

So here is an article that I thought would be helpful to anyone getting ready to pop the big question. Although this article may seem like it only pertains to guys, I think that anyone getting ready to propose, whether guy or girl, could use a few pointers to make this wonderful experience a bit less nerve racking ;-)

So here are the dos and don'ts of marriage proposals:

Do:

1.Do Test the Waters
Before you propose, the two of you should talk about the possibility of getting married. Make sure it's something that you both want, and agree on major issues such as children. You don't want her to be taken completely off guard, as such a proposal is almost certainly guaranteed to elicit only a hesitating yes, if not a, "I'll have to think about it."

2.Do Make it a Surprise
Even though you have discussed getting married, the marriage proposal itself should still be a surprise. Find a moment and a way that she won't be suspecting.

3.Do Be Prepared
Saying, "Will you marry me?" is a huge deal, and one that leaves many proposers completely tongue-tied. So practice! It might feel silly, but say the words out loud a few times. You might also write down exactly what you're going to say, to make sure you come off as smooth and confident.

4.Do Find The Right Engagement Ring
Since wearing an engagement ring is a lifetime commitment, make sure it's the right style. You might find an opportunity to window shop for rings when you are walking past a store, or bring it up in conversation. You can also ask her mother or best friend to help choose the ring.

5.Do Know if She Wants to Pick the Engagement Ring
Most brides want their proposal to include an engagement ring, but others are very particular about their jewelry, and want to be part of the buying/designing process.

6.Do Talk to Her Parents
We've come a long way from when women were property who needed their father's permission, yet, there is still something nice and respectful about asking for the parents' blessing.

7.Do Pick a Personal Spot
Think about your favorite romantic places -- choose a meaningful spot to pop the question. It could be as simple as in your living room, or as complicated as whisking her away for a weekend in Paris. Just don't ask her in a supermarket aisle!

8.Do Be Creative
Incorporate your personality, favorite things, foods etc. into the proposal. Make it memorable rather than a cookie cutter proposal.

9.Do Drop to One Knee
It's not 1950, but there is something so charming and romantic about a man on one knee asking the love of his life to marry him. Even if you're not a traditional guy, it will add to the seriousness and lovingness of the proposal.

10.Do Tell Her Why You Want to Marry Her
Don't just utter those 4 little words, tell her why she's the one for you, what marriage means to you, and what your hopes for the future are. You might say something like "My life has never and could never be the same after I met you. You've made me more joyful, more stable, and more inspired. I can't picture the rest of my life without you by my side. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?"

11.Do Share the News
Take a moment to reflect on your engagement, but bring along a cell phone or calling card for sharing the good news.

Don't:

1.Don't Make it Public
If script-writers are to be believed, every wedding proposal takes place in front of a thousand people. But unless she's said she wants a splashy proposal, make it intimate and personal thing. Most brides would prefer to have that magical moment be just the two of you – after all, you've got the rest of your lives to tell other people about your marriage but you've only got one engagement moment.

2.Don't Hide the Engagement Ring in Food
I hate to say it, (as I'm sure there are some readers who were planning to do just this) but hiding the engagement ring in food is a tired idea. It's been in a thousand movies and TV shows, and you won't win any points for creativity. Even worse, you may end your romantic proposal with a trip to the emergency room or the dentist.

3.Don't Propose at a Sports Game
Games are loud and chaotic events. Even if she is the biggest sports fan you ever knew, the arena doesn't allow you to have any of the reflection and focus that making such a momentous decision deserves.

4.Don't Do it in Front of Her Family
While your families will merge with your wedding, it is not their decision to do so. Proposals in front of family have an added level of stress that you don't need. Take this moment to be just the two of you; don't worry, you can call everyone immediately afterward.

5.Don't Make it Too Complicated
While it's good to be creative with your proposal, it is important to keep the focus on what's important: the proposal itself. If you are worrying about whether or not the limousine will get to the balloon ride in time, you're worrying about the wrong thing.

6.Don't Propose Too Early in the Relationship
When you're in the first flush of love, it's hard not to do impetuous and foolish things. Yet waiting until your relationship is stable will only strengthen your marriage. Make sure you really know each other, and before you commit to it for the rest of your lives.

7.Don't Expect Her to Say Yes Immediately
You're asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you – an extremely important decision. Just because you've asked, doesn't mean she is ready to say yes. If your sweetheart says maybe, take it in stride and give her some time to consider the proposal. After all, you wouldn’t want this amazing person to marry every Tom, Dick and Harry who asked her, would you?

Ugly dress? What about ugly flowers?

So it has become a cliche, the ugly bridesmaid's dress forced upon young women as there recently engaged friends and family suddenly loose all sense of taste and fashion in the excitement of planning their wedding.

You hear about it all the time. The fluffy peach chiffon, the slinky aqua satin, the mint green number with puffed sleeves. There is even a website devoted to the ugliest of the ugly: http://www.uglydress.com/

But what about the horrible flowers some bridesmaids are forced to carry. In the effort to save money, to make everything match, to force flowers into styles and colors which are not natural, brides can really choose some awful things for their bridesmaids. Maybe it is just because I work for a florist, but I could probably suck it up and wear an ugly dress to be a good friend. HOWEVER, when it comes to the flowers I would just have to say, " sorry, not going to be seen holding THAT!"

Some of the worst I have found:

Personally, I am not a fan of calla lilies, however, a single flower can be beautiful. But it just looks cheap if you try to bulk it with leaves AND rhinestones AND an enormous amount of baby blue ribbon.

Some people really just aren't into flowers, which is fine. I know feathers and crystals are popular alternatives, but you can do it classy or tacky. There is a very fine line!

And sometimes people just try much to hard, like this beauty. Kale is going to almost always going to be a bad idea for a bouquet, you can't get around that, but the pearl pins in the button mums are the detail that really brings this over to the dark side. Who thought that was a good idea?

But this one is the worst of all. oh the horror! Why would someone think that this was attractive?

NICO HERE!! I am so excited to share Jeannie and John's wedding with you. These are some of my most favorite shots. ( there will be more to come) It was a very hot palm springs day at The EPIC Parker Hotel. These kinds of days STRESS me and my flowers out!! After hours of babying my precious blooms, everything was a successful KNOCK out. (The flowers were fine Im just over dramatic.. he he) I had so much fun with this wedding. Jeannie and John were cool, hip and open to awesome crazy "Nico" ideas. Visual properities such as gold bird cages, authentic vintage milk glass (from the 50's), carnation garlands, gold birds, cut limes, gold branches, and rhynstone buckles were some of the few eye catchers. Flowers used were, coral and blush peony, pale yellow and pink tulips, orange ranunculous, pale pink hydrangea, and orange cymbidium orchids. WE HAD A BLAST!!!

I'll be paying tribute to all the different varieties of garden roses over the next several weeks, and I want to start with my absolute FAVORITE, The Fair Bianca. This feathery , glorious, creamy, rose with a very light fragrance has become an all time favorite amongst Brides to be. Its resemblance to the famous and popular peony is erie and a great substitute, if you are summer bride. YAY Summer is HERE! (almost)

Do you know what you're putting on your skin?

For my GIRLY MONDAYS blog post this week, I want to cover the basics of skin care and make up. Although a lot of ladies are unaware of it, there are actually two different grades of skin care and make up available on the beauty market today: cosmetic grade and pharmaceutical grade.

Cosmetic quality is what department, drug and grocery stores sell. These include the big and expensive brands and the cheaper ones. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows cosmetic grade products to contain up to 30% bacteria. This means that ingredients may only be 70% pure. It is a large breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to contact dermatitis, an itchy red rash. This is why makeup packaging tells us to throw away any unused product every 90-180 days. And 95% of the skincare industry is cosmetic quality and unregulated by the FDA. Cosmetic companies are not required to register their products with the FDA, while cosmetic products are subjective and do not reflect or require scientific testing.

Pharmaceutical grade skin care products are FDA regulated. The FDA requires that pharmaceutical grade products be 99.9% pure ingredients. Products must contain 0.1%, or less, of bacteria. Only 5% of the skin care industry is under the regulation established by the FDA and considered pharmaceutical grade skin care products.

So now that you know all this fantastic new info, be sure to check your products before applying them to your face and I will definitely have more makeup and skin care tips to follow next week :-)

An Unforgettable Love Story

I came across this marriage tale as I was browsing my friend Susan Schneider's web page. Susan is the author of "Unforgettable: Vignettes of Love," a book filled with personal accounts of engagement and wedding stories from around the world. Besides being an accomplished writer, Susan also works with numerous wedding photographers, offering to eloquently type up the couple's love story so it can be placed in their celebration album along with the other event photos.

Enough about my brilliant friend Susan and on to the most wonderful love story I have heard since Cinderella. The tale is about Pam and Paul, as told by Pam. They were married in 2004 in Harrington, Delaware. She was 44; he was 38.

A fairytale is a fictitious, highly fanciful story. Our story of how we met is very true and very real even though it culminated in a fairy tale happening. My last name is “Galyean”, and I was married to a wonderful man named Dan Galyean before he died in 1996. I have a daughter and a son. In 1999, my son finally talked me into buying a computer and stepping into the 20th century. When I setup my email account, under the name of 'pgalyean', I was told the name was already being used. I thought to myself, “Now how many 'pgalyean's' can there be in the world?

I wrote to this person, asking who he was and if we could be related in some way. The person who wrote back was named Paul Galyean, and he lived in Arizona. We sent emails back and forth for a few months, finding out about each other and trying to figure out if he was somehow related to my late husband's family.

As it turns out, Paul's stepfather adopted him when he was 18, and Paul took his last name, “Galyean”. Paul told me he had three children and was separated. We not only had the same last name given to us by special men, but we each had a son with the same name, Michael. Too weird.

We sent emails to each other every now and then after I had to change my email address since Paul had 'taken' mine. We lost touch for about a year when I heard from him in a strange way.

When I setup my Yahoo account in February 2001, there was a name I didn’t recognize in my friend's list. When I instant messaged this person, I learned it was Paul again, using a nickname from school. I learned Paul had moved back to his hometown of Dallas, Texas and was now divorced. We started chatting and I learned that his stepdaughter had recently passed away. I was writing a term paper for my psychology class about the stages of grief, and I was able to offer my help to him and his youngest daughter. Having experienced grief myself, I was able to tell him and his daughter what emotions to expect. We formed a very close bond through this experience. We began to send each other emails every day, and we chatted almost every night on the computer and occasionally on the phone. Finally, after three months of talking every day, I decided to take the next step. I asked Paul if it would be okay for me to come to Texas to meet him. He said of course. I knew I was taking a lot of chances. Some might have thought this a stupid idea, but something told me that I needed to do this; that this guy was special.

We planned on marrying and had heard of a contest being run by the Delaware State Fair. It asked couples to submit a unique “fairytale story” to win a fairytale-style wedding. We entered the contest. The day of the winning announcement came and we dressed hoping that someone would be at our door between the allotted hours. No one showed, so we figured we lost, changed into grungy clothes and started doing household chores. While changing the toilet in the bathroom, we heard the doorbell ring. We opened the door and were shocked to see a TV crew standing there to surprise us with balloons and an envelope with the appropriate paperwork to give us a fairytale wedding! We were thrilled!

On our wedding day the groom and wedding party were escorted in horse-drawn carriages, and my father and I arrived in a horse-drawn pumpkin carriage – just like Cinderella! We were married on the fairgrounds, during one of the largest events in Delaware with everyone celebrating with us.

It was a "Pure Joy"

Last night I had the privilege to join my fellow event colleagues at a grand celebration at Pure Joy Catering, honoring their two newest event managers , Toby and Patrick! I had the best time. They graciously served us mango margaritas (I had too many..), Wine and delicious passed hors d'oeuvres. We got to hang out in the kitchen as Chef Jerry served us right out of the oven, in their beautiful new building! Lynette La mere, (owner) has truly made her mark as a business women and her love for food and people generously shines through. Personally, I just love the heck out of her!!!! Sometimes I just don't understand

Nico wanted me to blog about something that I hate about the wedding industry. Seriously, don't get me started, there are many many things.

But let's start with something I really just don't understand.

This denim wedding dress from Sat'n Spurs. (http://www.satnspurs.com/) They have a whole line of western bridal wear & accessories, including lots of denim. Some of their stuff is really hideous, but they do have some cute stuff mixed in.

I actually think this dress is kinda interesting. I can see a funky bride totally rocking it (slightly tongue in cheek of course) with a cowboy hat and boots at a casual ranch wedding. Sometimes the big poofy beaded white princess dress just doesn't work. Beach weddings, ranch weddings, intimate ceremonies at the courthouse, etc. require a different look than a big formal event. Now to wear the denim dress in a cathedral or a ballroom - not such a good idea.

So, what don't I understand? The freakin' styling! Why oh why would you add white satin gloves, a parasol, a purse, AND a hat/veil to this dress? And it's not that the photo is dated (which it appears to be), it's just the horrible combination of formal and casual makes it look even MORE awkward.

Trying to style the dress into looking more formal completely ruins the look. It already is a denim dress with embroidery, a corset, and a poofy skirt - a parasol is really not needed.

Flower Power: Muppet Gerbera Daisies

I'm obsessed with these fun textural colorful gerbera daisies that are called "muppets". These inexpensive flora are perfect if you're looking for bold color and texture on a "dime". If you're wedding theme is more on the "romantic" or "classic" lines, these might be great for your rehearsal dinner or day after brunch if you're not looking to spend a lot. I think they are super cool. Check them out, Id love to hear your thoughts.

Tattoo Ring????

Nico Here! Soooo, I was speaking with a florist friend of mine who is recently engaged who wanted a tattoo ring instead of a real one. (and when I say real, I mean real.) As florists we ALWAYS have our hands in buckets of water and she has a HUGE fear of loosing her ring. I had never heard of a tattoo ring before and to be honest this concept kind of scares me. The above picture is of the hands of underage mother Bristol Palin and Ex Hunk hockey player/deadbeat father levi Johnston. What do you think? I say, forget the ink, and COUGH up the DIAMONDS!!!!!

OLD NAVY Flip Flops

Ok, I have to be honest, I am not a HUGE fan of Old Navy, but I LOVE LOVE their flip flops. Oh and can I also say they are $3.80????? Yes, yes they are. Screw favors, get your guests a pair of comfy flip flops to "bop" around S.B in. Especially for those of you who are having a beach ceremony, put a bunch of colorful flip flops in a large galvanized bucket by your ceremony area and instantly add comfort to your wedding. I have no idea why these cheap flip flops are so comfy, but they also come in awesome colors and I think their FABO.

Hey Fabulous people!! As a floral expert (I think I can give myself that title, riight?) I would like to share a little summer secret that is easy on the pocket book. One of my fave flowers is the Dahlia, it comes is so many awesome shapes and colors and is very inexpensive. If you are a blushing summer bride then these fluffy colorful blooms will create a bold and awesome statement for your centerpieces. I wouldn't suggest them to be added to bouquets and boutonnieres as they like like to be in water;) Dahlia up your wedding!!

On a Personal Note

I recently attended a wedding in which two great friends of mine finally tied the knot. The bride has always been a very crafty individual and thus had a strong desire to add a personal touch to her wedding in, what I thought, was a very unique and beautiful way. Instead of spending a large chunk of her wedding budget on the perfect shoes and bridal lingerie, the bride made a simple and cheap trip to Michaels and bought bedazzle gems to upgrade her wedding items :-) She added beautiful strands of gems to her sandals, giving them that extra touch without spending a fortune on them. Furthermore, the bride also bedazzled her undies with the words 'I DO,' which I thought was also a darling idea.

In a nutshell, if you want to add that special touch to your wedding wardrobe, but would prefer to save the budget for the flowers or cake, a short trip to a crafts store will provide you with all you need to personalize everything from your shoes to your lingerie :-)

Love on a Whim

For my first I'M IN LOVE blog I decided to share the love story of two wonderful friends of mine that have been married for many, many years now....Clara Minor and Dio Santiago worked side by side at Hewlett Packard in Mountain View, CA and never gave each other a second glance until one fateful day in October of 1972. A late night dinner was followed by three hours of conversation over a cold glass of beer in a restaurant with peanut shell covered floors, as Clara and Dio slowly began to realize that there might be more to their new found friendship than they thought.

Empty glasses of beer were left behind on the bar as the couple headed out for a relaxing drive up Skyline Blvd, a road that runs from Saratoga to San Francisco. The pleasant drive ended on a high peak in Palo Alto, where Clara and Dio found themselves gazing over the whole bay area, which brightly lit up the dark night sky. After enjoying the spectacular and romantic evening view for a couple of long hours, time finally came back into play, as Clara cleverly suggested that Dio spend the night at her house, reasoning that her place was closer than his :-) Dio gladly agreed, which ultimately marked the beginning of his 'extended stay' at Clara's house and their lives together.

Six months later, the happy couple was ready to begin their life together. Whereas an engagement may seem like the next step to take, Clara and Dio decided to test their love for each other in a rather unconventional way and made a commitment to leave their California lives behind and hitch hike their way to Alaska together! This daring journey strengthened their growing relationship and allowed Clara and Dio to realize that they were fully committed to each other and their common dreams and aspirations.

Although their life in Alaska was adventure filled and allowed them to start their family with the birth of their daughter Jessica, it wasn't until after the young family relocated to California and welcomed their son Rio that Clara Minor and Dio Santiago officially tied the knot in December 1985. The wedding was held in their California based martial arts school. that literally came as a surprised to all of their guests, who thought they were attending an appreciation celebration :-) I suppose good things can come in bigger packages after all...

This is a wedding I designed at Roblar Winery in Santa Ynez. Joanna and Cooper were such an amazing and beautiful couple. I was very honored and blessed to be a part of their special day. The day was full of beautiful spring floral such as peony, ranunculous, hydrangea, roses, and camellia. I would like to thank the my fellow vendors who were just FAB! Coordinator, Maren Parson, of Maren Parson's Events was SUCH an amazing pleasure to work with. She has style, grace and good face.:) She is also organized, cool, calm and collected- I just LOVE HER!! She also bought us snacks and water to knosh on!! Beta at and her awesome staff at Roblar, Great food and SOOO accommodating. NICO designs have moved our studios along with fabulous lighting designer Lani with LBPS. We are located at 5390 Overpass road. We look forward to meeting at our new amazing wharehouse. Bacara Event/Valentine's Rant and Update

I am busy at work and finishing up last details for my event at the beautiful and very very expensive Bacara Resort and Spa, this evening. All the florals came in beautiful but at the highest prices, due to VALENTINE'S DAY!!!! I think I lost about 10 years off my life when I looked at the bill! None the less we are moving forward, and making sure everything is perfect.

Jasmine and I have been running around like Chickens with their heads cut off (She's The chicken and I'm more of a turkey... hehe) to make sure everything all turns out as planned. This Holiday makes everything more challenging, for our line of work. Regretfully (not really), this is my first Valentine's Day that I will NOT be taking Valentine's orders since I was 12 years old. I really don't know if I will miss staying up night after night the days before the black day, stripping roses, filling vases, dealing with desperado guys, and making bows...Oh so many bows . Everyone thinks "Oh Flower shops make SO much money on Valentine's Day!"

Well, Actually they don't. They work their tails off weeks before preparing. Only to find out wholesale flower prices have DOUBLED or even TRIPLED at times. For all of you that will be ordering flowers for V-Day, don't be cheap, just cough up the dough or go to the grocery store. My heart does go out to everyone in the flower business right now.

Okay that's enough from Debbie Downer!!!

On a "brighter" note I have to confess that I have NOT gone to the gym or dance class since I've been back from New York. UHG. Monday will be my day to get back in the groove.

I have an obsession with hairspray, spray paint, spray glue, spray glitter, leaf shine spray and pretty much anything that sprays. (I'm Sorry Green people!!) Let me also be clear that this obsession is in an artsy, overly creative, obsessed with work kind of way NOT in a druggie, tweaker, east LA kind of way (Please, I wear a mask!). Today I took my obsession to a whole other level and killed a spider with my can of hairspray. I hate spiders, love hairspray and yes ladies and gents I am an insect murderer.

Bling IS Back!

Bling has been creeping up on us for the past few years, but this is the first year we're going to see a lot more of it. Sparkles are always a fun way to add romance and glitz to your wedding. Search for antique brooches, old crystal chandeliers and beaded crystal votive cups and BLING up your BIG day. Fun, fun fun!!

Cotton Bridal Bouquet

I think this is just SOOOO darn fabulous!! Frank Alexander of NYC , designed this bridal bouquet out of cut cotton branchings. The bride said she wanted something (to carry) that was light weight, organic , and wouldn't die or wilt. So Gorg!!! Good Work Frank! LOVE it!

Green with Envy

Carnations have a bad Rap, but I'm obsessed with this one!!! Green carnations are so fun. As a lot of you know (or maybe you don't know) green flowers are very hard to come by. I get bored with proposing and designing with the same ones... Green orchids, green callas, green roses, Bla!

I think the green carnation will add fabulous color and texture to centerpieces and maybe even boutonnieres???? I love new flowers and think this one is a great find. Boy, has it come a long way from the dyed ones they sell at Conroy's for St. Paddy's Day. :)

Leaving New York and heading back to work

I'm at the airport and just getting to ready to leave my favorite city. It has been an amazing trip with fabulous food (and drink.. hehe) and unforgettable memories. Working in New York

On Saturday I got the great opportunity to work with Ruby on an event at the "espace" in New York city. It was fun working on vacation and with Ruby. We made ALL the flower arrangements on site!!! It was a crazy day but everything came out beautiful. Check out the pics!

New York City Ballet

What most of you don't know about me is what a huge ballet fan I am. I started taking ballet classes at the age of 18. I danced 4 hours a day, 5 days a week into my twenties. As I battled with my weight it became apparent that I could never dance professionally. The art of ballet will always be in my heart as I still take classes for fun.

Tonight I have the amazing opportunity to see the New York City Ballet perform here in NYC at the Lincoln center. I am SO excited!!! I will keep you all posted!
